Sharing the Harvest is just one example of a growing project with Growing Hope Globally, a partner of Covenant World Relief and Development.  Across the country churches have urban gardens, auctions, and potlucks with food from around the globe.

Watch this short video and see how your church might get involved with starting its own growing project.

Sharing the Harvest Team Profiles

Don & Nancy Asbury

Above is a photo of Don and Nancy Asbury, who are part of the Sharing the Harvest committee at Wiley Heights Covenant Church. The Asbury’s have been involved with STH since 2015 because they saw “an opportunity to help others.” Don is always active on Packing Day moving bins, packing bags, and getting the vehicles loaded. Nancy enjoys helping with preparing for Packing Day and, on Packing Day, with taking apple orders and running the money table. They enjoy “doing what [they] can to take a bite out of hunger,” explaining that “it feels good to help others.” In her free time, Nancy enjoys reading, knitting, and going on road trips with her husband.

Cara Elzie

Above is a photo of Cara Elzie. Elzie has been been involved with the Sharing the Harvest since its first year (2012), and is now the marketing lead. She enjoys participating in STH because “food insecurity and food justice are topics I am immensely passionate about and I love getting to make a tangible impact in these areas through STH. Knowing that the time and effort I am putting into STH is going towards a great cause inspires me to stay dedicated to our work and motivates me to try and innovate new ideas that can elevate STH to the next level. Additionally, this is a community event that brings together churches from all over Washington and Oregon to collaborate on something meaningful, and I enjoy being part of synergetic projects like Sharing the Harvest.” Cara is currently pursuing a BA/MA in History with a double minor in Justice Studies and Sustainable Food Systems. She enjoys using her skills to work towards creating a more compassionate, educated, and just world. In her free time, she enjoys reading, writing, traveling, running, playing musical instruments, spending time with animals, and volunteering with various organizations.

Sherrin Melcher

Above is a photo of Sherrin Melcher. Sherrin Melcher is a core member of the Sharing the Harvest committee at Wiley Heights Covenant Church and has been involved with the project since its first year (2012). Melcher is passionate about Sharing the Harvest because it “is a way for people, through a simple purchase of food, to make a global impact on eradicating food insecurity. There is nothing more powerful than a grass roots movement of people from all different churches working together with one purpose. It really is a beautiful thing to be a part of, I would encourage everyone to attend at least one packing day event.” In addition to STH, Melcher is also on Wiley’s worship team and is the church chair. She always tries “to see people through His eyes and accept people where they are.”

Ann Snipes

Above is a photo of Ann Snipes. Ann, along with her husband, Dan Snipes, is the Sharing the Harvest project lead. Snipes enjoys being part of STH because it “encourages a connection between farmers across the globe, as well as members within the Covenant Church. We show compassion and care for each other, not only through fundraising, but also through sharing our stories and building relationships. This makes the world smaller and builds the faith of everyone involved.” Ann and Dan live on an apple orchard with their two daughters, a dog, and two cats. In their free time the Snipes family enjoys cycling, cross-country skiing, hiking, and swimming. Ann also enjoys gardening, playing the flute, crafting, and upland bird hunting.

Becky Thomas

Above is a photo of Becky Thomas. Thomas is a member of the Sharing the Harvest team at Wiley Heights Covenant Church and has been part of Sharing the Harvest since its first year (2012). She enjoys being part of STH because it is a wonderful opportunity for churches to “work together for good.” Becky is married to Chawley Thomas, and they have two daughters and three grandsons. In her free time, Thomas enjoys making and installing barn quilts to “honor the farming community in which [she lives].” So far, the Becky and her husband have installed over 70 quilts – all different and unique!

Dennis Pool

Above is a photo of Dennis Pool. Dennis is a member of Shoreline Covenant Church and has been involved with Sharing the Harvest for the last nine years. Pool wanted to get involved with Sharing the Harvest because it is “a great way to share our gifts with others.” In his free time, he enjoys gardening and working on Bonsai projects.

Join Us!

Working Together … we can make a difference in the lives of others!

Like every effort focused on societal change – it takes many people to make a difference.

We are looking for generous churches to purchase apples, generous growers to share of their harvest, and generous businesses who might be able to supply in-kind donations.  If you would like to help, please contact us.
